Devalia Gypsy Safari: close views in a shorter drive

Devalia — formally the Gir Interpretation Zone — is a fenced stretch of natural Gir forest a short drive from Sasan Gir village. Inside the fence the habitat is real: dry deciduous trees, scrub, grassy clearings, rocky slopes and water points, home to Asiatic lions, leopards, deer, nilgai and a long list of birds. Because the area is compact, animals are much easier to find than in the open sanctuary.

The Gypsy safari is the open-vehicle way to see it. Instead of a covered bus you ride in a small open 4x4 with a guide, which means clearer views, better photographs and the feeling of a real jungle drive — in under an hour inside the zone. It suits families, photographers, short stays and anyone whose Gir Jungle Safari permits are sold out.

Highlights

  • Open 4x4 Gypsy with a guide, 4, 6 or 8 seats
  • Natural Gir habitat inside a fenced zone
  • Good chance of seeing Asiatic lions at close range
  • Seven slots a day, morning and afternoon
  • Easy to combine with the Gir Jungle Safari on the same day
  • Guides used to explaining how the Gir ecosystem works

Why the Gypsy instead of the bus

Devalia runs open Gypsies and covered buses on the same circuit. The Gypsy sits lower and carries only a handful of people, so everyone gets a clear view when a lion is beside the track. There is no glass or roof between you and the forest — you hear alarm calls and notice the cooler air near water. Your guide sits with you and points out tracks, birds and behaviour you would otherwise miss.

If you are travelling with toddlers, elderly parents or a large group on a budget, the Devalia bus safari may suit you better. Many families split up: photographers take the Gypsy while others take the bus.

Wildlife at Devalia

Lions are the main attraction — a pride resting under a tree, a lioness walking along the track, or a male patrolling the edge of his area. Leopards live here too but stay hidden; scan branches and rocky ledges early and late in the day. Spotted deer graze in clearings, sambar keep to cover and nilgai often stand in the open watching vehicles. Peafowl, grey francolin, Indian roller, shikra and crested serpent eagle are common sightings for anyone who looks up.

Photography tips

A 70–200 mm or 100–400 mm zoom covers most situations; lions can be surprisingly close. A small bean bag on the vehicle frame steadies a long lens better than a tripod. Keep the shutter at 1/500 s or faster for walking animals and switch to continuous focus when a lion starts to move. The first morning slot and the last afternoon slot give the warmest light. No flash, no calling out, and stay seated when the guide asks.

How booking works

  1. Send your preferred date, slot and the number of adults and children through the enquiry form on this page or on WhatsApp.
  2. We check availability for your dates and share a written quote that separates the forest department's permit, Gypsy and guide charges from our service charge.

  4. We submit the permit request with the department. When the permit is issued, we send it to you on WhatsApp and email.

Do's

  • Carry the original photo ID used in the booking for every traveller
  • Reach the reporting point at least 30 minutes before your slot
  • Wear muted colours — khaki, olive, brown or grey
  • Keep your voice low and phone on silent during the drive
  • Stay seated and keep hands inside the vehicle near animals
  • Carry water in a reusable bottle and take all litter back

Don'ts

  • Do not feed, call out to or try to attract any animal
  • Do not ask the driver to leave the route or follow animals
  • No smoking, alcohol, loud music, plastic or drones
  • Do not use camera flash at animals
  • Do not wear bright red, white or neon clothing

  • Original photo ID for every traveller

  • Binoculars for birds
  • Camera or phone with spare batteries
  • Reusable water bottle

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Devalia Gypsy Safari?

The drive inside the zone is usually 45 to 60 minutes. Allow about two hours in total including reporting and boarding.

Will I definitely see a lion at Devalia?

Sightings are never guaranteed, but because Devalia is a compact fenced area with natural habitat, most visitors do see lions.

Is Devalia the same as Gir National Park?

No. Devalia is the Gir Interpretation Zone, a fenced area of Gir forest near Sasan. The Gir Jungle Safari runs in the open sanctuary and is a longer, less predictable drive.

Gypsy or bus — which should I choose?

Choose the Gypsy for photography and an open-air safari feel in a small group. Choose the bus for toddlers, seniors or a tighter budget.

Are cameras allowed?

Yes. Phones are fine; DSLR and video cameras carry a separate fee paid at the reception counter.

Can I do Devalia and the Gir Jungle Safari on the same day?

Yes — the jungle safari in the morning and Devalia in the afternoon is one of the most popular combinations.
