Ambardi Safari Park: Gir's quieter eastern side

Ambardi Safari Park, near Dhari in Amreli district, is a fenced wildlife interpretation zone on the eastern edge of the Gir landscape. Spread over roughly 365 hectares along the Shetrunji river, it mixes open, savannah-like grassland with scrub, low hills and water bodies — country where Asiatic lions are often seen in the open.

Visitors tour the park in non-AC forest department buses on a fixed circuit of about an hour. Alongside lions you may see leopard, nilgai, chinkara, spotted deer, porcupine signs and plenty of birds. Ambardi is much quieter than Sasan, and it is the natural choice if you are travelling from Bhavnagar, Amreli, Palitana or the eastern side of Saurashtra.

Highlights

  • Open grassland where lions are often seen in the open
  • Comfortable forest department bus safari
  • About one hour on a fixed circuit
  • Fewer visitors than Sasan Gir and Devalia
  • Six slots a day
  • Close to the Khodiyar temple and dam near Dhari

The grassland advantage

Ambardi's landscape is more open than the dense teak of central Gir. With less cover, lions resting on a rise or walking across a clearing stand out, and the low light of the first and last slots is lovely for photography.

The park was created for lion conservation and awareness, so the guides on board are used to explaining how lions use this eastern landscape, how they share it with farmers and herders, and why corridors along the Shetrunji river matter.
