Green Walk: a gentle guided walk through Periyar

The Green Walk is one of Periyar Tiger Reserve's short day treks — an easy-paced, guided walk for people who want to experience the forest on foot without a long or strenuous hike. It takes around two and a half hours and focuses on the whole forest rather than only big animals: trees and plants, birds, butterflies, insects and the tracks and signs left by mammals.

Your guide explains how the forest works — which trees fruit when, why certain birds flock together, how to tell elephant from gaur signs — and stops whenever something interesting appears. It is a good first activity in Periyar and suits families with older children, birdwatchers and photographers.

Highlights

  • Easy-paced guided forest walk of about 2.5 hours
  • Focus on plants, birds, butterflies and animal signs
  • Good introduction to Periyar for first-time visitors
  • Small groups led by trained guides
  • Chance of langurs, giant squirrels, deer and more

Programme fee (set by the reserve)

  • Green Walk (per person)

    Fee: ₹400

Fees are set by Periyar Tiger Reserve and can be revised. Park entry and bus charges are extra unless your quote says otherwise.

What you will notice

On foot the forest becomes detailed: the giant leaves of teak, the long strands of lianas, a line of ants carrying leaves, orange flashes of a minivet flock, fresh pug marks in mud. Guides also point out medicinal plants used by local communities.

Mammals are a bonus. Nilgiri langurs and Malabar giant squirrels are common in the canopy, and sambar or wild boar may be seen at clearings. Elephants and gaur use the area too — your guide keeps the group at a safe distance.
