The Nature Walk is Periyar Tiger Reserve's classic introduction to the forest on foot. Small groups of up to six people walk a 4–5 km trail for about two and a half hours with a trained guide from the local tribal community. Trails start at the Boat Landing and pass through several habitats — lake shore, grassland, moist deciduous and evergreen forest — so the scenery changes as you go.
The guides grew up around this forest and read it with ease: the scratch marks of a bear on a tree, an elephant's path through the grass, the call of a hornbill before it appears. Binoculars are provided, which makes it a lovely walk for birds and butterflies, and the small group size keeps it calm and personal.

Walks begin near the lake, where kingfishers, cormorants and darters hunt along the shore. Moving into the forest, you may find Malabar giant squirrels, Nilgiri langurs and flocks of mixed small birds. Deer, gaur and elephants are seen at a distance on some walks.
Your guide stops often to explain plants, tracks and behaviour. The pace is easy, but the ground is uneven, so good shoes matter.
