The Gir Jungle Safari starts from the Sasan reception area, and Devalia Safari Park is about 20–25 minutes away. Somnath temple is about an hour away, Diu about two and a half hours, and the Girnar hills near Junagadh about an hour and a half.
The Gir forest is open for safaris from mid-October to mid-June. December to February is cool and pleasant, while March to May is hot but often good for sightings near water.
Two nights is the most popular choice. It allows one morning and one afternoon safari, with time for Devalia Safari Park or a drive to Somnath in between.
Safari permits are issued by the forest department for fixed slots and open for booking a set number of days ahead, so book as early as you can for winter weekends and holidays. Carry ID for every traveller, as it is checked at the gate. Morning safaris start early, so a stay close to Sasan saves a long drive before dawn.
